PokerStars.net NAPT Los Angeles Day 2: Guinther Flying the Highest

Jimmie Guinther
It was all about the money on Day 2 in the City of Angels for the 2010 PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour Los Angeles Main Event. When play began on Sunday afternoon, 314 players returned to action after the remaining fields from the two starting days combined. After seven 75-minute levels of play and the bursting of the money bubble, 81 players were left standing to move on to Day 3. Topping them all is Jimmie Guinther with 894,000 in chips. Not too far behind him is Travis Pearson with 835,000.
With 314 players returning, more than two thirds of them would fall short of the money - only 104 places would get paid. Finishing on the bubble in 105th place was 2008 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker Main Event winner Carter King.
King had check-raised the flop of {8-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Diamonds} against Micah Raskin. A reraise was the response from Raskin before King moved all in. Raskin called with just the {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs} for ace high. His ace high was currently the best hand against the {10-Spades}{9-Spades} for King. King did have some draws working in his favor. The turn brought the {8-Clubs} and the river the {3-Clubs}, missing King and giving Raskin that pot. That was the hand that put everyone else in the money and guaranteed him or her at least $7,500.
As soon as the money bubble burst, more players hit the rail. Those who squeaked their way into the money, but won’t be returning for Day 3 were Marcello Del Grosso, Shannon Shorr, Ronnie Bardah, Adam Junglen, Eric Baldwin and Joseph Elpayaa.
There are still plenty of big names who will be returning to action tomorrow to continue their quest to claim the last title up for grabs of Season 1 on the NAPT. Team PokerStars will be represented by Jason Mercier, Anh Van Nguyen and George Lind. Nguyen has the most chips out of those three with 614,000.

The Nightly Turbo: World Poker Tour Foxwoods Update, Feds Raid Online Payment Processor, and More

Royal Flush Girls
While you were out dressed as your favorite Glee character, 28 poker players were battling it out on the felt in Mashantucket, Connecticut, for the Foxwoods World Poker Finals. We'll tell you how many players finished up that event on Sunday and how the field is looking today, tell you about the recent raid on a payment processor, and more in this edition of the Nightly Turbo.
In Case You Missed It
The PokerStars.net European Poker Tour Vienna crowned a winner Sunday. One player at the final table had a chance to overtake Phil Ivey on the All-Time Money list and become the third-ever triple-crown winner. Did Daniel Negreanu do it? You'll have to read the EPT Vienna recap to find out.
We know you like to check out other players grind stations (just to see how much better yours is), and that's why we check them out for you and bring you videos of them. The Final Table of the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event is less than a week away. For the past few weeks, we've been profiling members of the November Nine, and this week is no different. To start out the week, and the new month, read a little bit about the chip leader going into the Final Table, Jonathan Duhamel.
World Poker Tour Foxwoods - Final Table Set
Over the weekend, the field at the World Poker Tour Foxwoods World Poker Finals shrank. It's nothing uncommon, it's a poker tournament. And now, the field is down to its televised final table of six. On Monday, 12 players took their seats in the Foxwoods poker room hoping to make the final table, but half of them would get no TV time. Hoyt Corkins was first to go, followed by Jason Mercier. With those two out of the way, the remaining players redrew and took their seats at a single ten-handed table.
Tom Marchese held the lead at that point with close to 2 million chips. Also in the mix was Sorel Mizzi and Keven Stammen. Ben Klier and Christopher Bonita made their exits in tenth and ninth places respectively. Besnik Ziba was eliminated in eighth place and that put the table squarely on the bubble. Bubble-boy honors went to Sorel Mizzi. He moved all in under-the-gun and was called by Moshin Charania from the big blind. Mizzi's {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} looked good against Charania's pocket tens on the {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop and {5-Hearts} turn, but, you guessed it, it was the river {10-Diamonds} that did Mizzi in. He took home $88,802 for his efforts. And with his exit, the final six bagged and tagged their chips -- leading the way into Tuesday's final table is Tom Marchese with just over 3 million in chips.

Feds Seize Funds from Secure Money, Inc.
Earlier this month, federal prosecutors in Seattle, Washington, asked a U.S. District Court judge to order the balance of six bank accounts associated with a Canadian payment processing company be turned over to the government. The feds believe the company, Secure Money, Inc., is responsible for facilitating payments to online poker players in Washington, where, you may remember, it is now illegal for residents to play online. Prosecutors are looking to seize over $500,000 from the company.
In a civil complaint filed earlier this month, an assistant U.S. attorney said: "Secure Money, Inc. distributed checks on behalf of illegal websites that host gambling activity. Processing checks that represent the funds derived from illegal gambling … constitutes a violation of the money laundering provisions set in federal law."
Millions of dollars in transactions are said to have been associated with Secure Money, Inc. According to documents, seven Washington residents have been paid by Secure Money, Inc., as well as an undercover agent who was playing on a well-known online poker site.

  2. Mano #2 - 31.03%
  3. Mano #1 - 11.03%
  4. Mano #3 - 8.97%

BoylePoker International Poker Open 2010 Review

IPO
If you went onto the BoylePoker International Poker Open homepage last week you will have seen a snippet of my review from last year which they used as a bit of press blurb, it read:
“This was the largest tournament ever in Europe and I expected some concessions to have been made either to the comfort or the structure of the tournament, but I discovered neither suffered. In fact, this was much better organised than a lot of much higher stakes events and I think that the BoylePoker International Poker Open is not only a must attend event next year, I think it could be the best value event in Europe for a new player to cut their teeth.”
Now if you have a busy day today, I would suggest you just read that quote and assume that everything was pretty much the same this year. Yes the BoylePoker International Poker Open 2010 was pretty much as successful, well organised, good natured and fun as its 2009 predecessor. Walking into the card room of the Regency Hotel in Dublin, it was almost as if nothing had changed and no time had passed at all – which is a good thing.
Once again a healthy mix of over 1000 locals, visitors, live players, online upstarts, recreational and professionals alike were there to prove that a record breaking amount of players could still be organised seemingly with ease. Although a lot of them were new to live poker the event went without hitch, finished on time and once again the innovation of emailing us our seat number the day before was a godsend.
This year unfortunately their own record of 1440 players was not broken, instead we had to settle for a still-probably-the-biggest-Eur opean-field-of-the-year 1293 instead. This wasn’t BoylePoker’s fault, this was the French Governments fault. Last year around half the field was French which made for a terrific atmosphere, but changes to the gambling policy over there meant that the French contingent was severely depleted. That was a real shame because the French made it fun and also it clearly suggests that the record would have been pulverised had they been around.
Perhaps in its place was the first ever Irish Poker Awards, unfortunately I was deep in a tournament at the time but did manage to catch Mad Marty Wilson on the mic during the break spinning his yarns and entertaining the crowds. Rather fittingly the International Poker Open won the Best Poker Festival award on the night and it does seem the ideal venue for the awards, because it has the right mix of low stakes punters (Who voted) and household names (Who are nominated) alike.
And ultimately that is probably why the International Poker Open is such a special event. The €200 is a justifiable amount for most recreational players and the 1293 runners is enough to appeal (Both as a first prize and prestige) to the established pros. The good structure and impeccable organisation is a real treat for those of us who don’t get to play in EPTs every week and is more than acceptable for those who are used to playing in Monte Carlo every year. Plus the fact that your average Joe gets to play alongside people like Neil Channing, Marty Smyth and Andy Black for a couple of hundred euros is the icing on the cake.
12 months on and the International Poker Open has retained its crown as the must attend event of the year for me. It’s one of the few events I don’t mind busting early from because of all of the fun surrounding it (Namely busy bars and some good side events) and for that reason I still maintain it’s a superb choice for anyone looking to dip their toes in live poker for the first time. It’s just a really good mix of a serious poker tournament but with a fun school trip ‘running around the dorms because the teacher has gone’ kind of atmosphere.
Nobody has registered for the $1000 Freeroll on WSOP.com so you could be in for a very easy night's work.
